Ahoy! This year at VBS we worked together to Seek the Treasures of Heaven!
We spent the week learning about saints who can show us the way to Heaven, learning about what treasures will help us get to Heaven, and seeking to grow in our own virtues on our path to Heaven!
On day one we read the story of the fishermen and Jesus making his disciples “fishers of men.” We talked about answering God’s call like Peter as we caught our own fish (with reflection questions about our story). We talked about having courage to answer God’s call like St. David as we attempted to defeat our own giants. And we used teamwork as we worked our way through our relay race and discussed how we grow in faith with one another.
On day two we read the story of Jesus walking on water. We played a game of Sink or Float and then made our own paper boats to see how much they could carry. We talked about the bravery of St. Joan of Arc and made our own shields. Outside we worked through an obstacle course and talked about what it meant to work through things that stand in our way and played a treasure gathering game with the large parachute.
On day three we read about Jesus giving his disciples the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven and making Peter the rock on which he built his church. We played a sorting game with various treasures, talking about what treasures we could and couldn’t bring with us to Heaven. We discussed the kindness of St. Nicholas in his giving and painted Kindness Rocks to place around town for others to find. We talked again about the importance of teamwork and our church family as we played a game of keepy-uppy. We also talked about how when we messed up (dropped the ball) we could pick it back up and try again.
We ended the day with our final treasure hunt, following clues related to our saints and stories for the week which led us to our treasure chest which proclaimed “Jesus is the greatest treasure!”
